The birthplace of the Prairie Style. Oak Park alone contains 25 Wright buildings — the densest concentration anywhere. Walk Forest Avenue and Chicago Avenue to see the Home & Studio, Unity Temple, the Heurtley House, the Thomas House, and a dozen more. Add the Robie House in Hyde Park and the Charnley-Persky House in the Gold Coast. Then head to Riverside for the Avery Coonley House and Playhouse — Wright's own favorite Prairie complex — and the Tomek House, a direct prototype for Robie. Extend south to Kankakee for the Bradley and Hickox Houses, two of Wright's earliest Prairie works.

Wright's home territory. Taliesin in Spring Green is the emotional center of his life's work. Combine with the S.C. Johnson Administration Building in Racine, Wingspread, and the Gilmore House in Madison for a full Wisconsin circuit.

Buffalo is one of the most rewarding Wright destinations in America — a dense cluster of Prairie masterworks within walking or short driving distance of each other. The Darwin D. Martin House Complex is the anchor: six interconnected structures including the Barton House, all restored to their 1907 appearance. The W.R. Heath House is a short walk away in the same Parkside neighborhood. The Fontana Boat House — Wright's only surviving boat house — sits on the waterfront. Drive 20 miles south to Derby for Graycliff, the Martin summer estate on the Lake Erie bluffs.

Taliesin West sits in the McDowell Mountain foothills north of Scottsdale. The desert setting is unlike any other Wright site — the building seems to grow from the land itself.

California holds some of Wright's most experimental work. Hollyhock House and the Ennis House in LA, plus the Marin County Civic Center in the Bay Area, show the full range of his California vision.

Iowa holds a surprising concentration of Wright landmarks. Mason City is the anchor — the Park Inn Hotel (the only surviving Wright hotel in the world) and the Stockman House sit two blocks apart in the downtown. Cedar Rapids adds the Lowell Walter Residence, one of Wright's finest Usonian houses, owned by the State of Iowa and open for tours on a dramatic bluff above the Cedar River.

Three Wright buildings that reward the traveler willing to venture beyond the well-worn Oak Park circuit. The Kenneth Laurent House in Rockford, Illinois is Wright's only house designed for a person with a physical disability — a circular Usonian of extraordinary humanity. The Burton J. Westcott House in Springfield, Ohio is the only Prairie house Wright designed in the state, meticulously restored after near-demolition. The Russell and Ruth Kraus House in Kirkwood, Missouri is Wright's only building in Missouri — one of the last Usonian houses he designed, now open as Ebsworth Park.

Michigan rewards Wright travelers with two distinct clusters. Grand Rapids has the Meyer May House — one of the most completely restored Prairie houses anywhere, free to visit — and the nearby Amberg House, completed by Marion Mahony Griffin. Kalamazoo has something unique: Taliesin Drive, a single residential street with three Wright Usonian houses (Levin, Eric V. Brown, and Robert Winn) within steps of each other. The lakeside town of St. Joseph adds the Ina Morris Harper House, one of the last buildings Wright completed before his death in 1959.

Two of Wright's most remarkable Southern commissions, separated by a day's drive. Auldbrass Plantation near Yemassee, South Carolina is Wright's only plantation complex — a complete hexagonal estate in the lowcountry, privately owned and rarely open. The Stanley Rosenbaum House in Florence, Alabama is the only Wright building in the state and one of the finest Usonian houses open to the public, meticulously restored by the City of Florence.
