Hollyhock House

Los Angeles, CaliforniaCompleted 1921

About This Building

A Mayan-inspired masterpiece in the hills of Hollywood.

Hollyhock House was Wright's first Los Angeles project, commissioned by oil heiress Aline Barnsdall. The design draws on Mayan temple architecture, with its abstract geometric ornament based on the hollyhock flower — Barnsdall's favorite. The house sits atop Olive Hill in East Hollywood, now a public park, and was Wright's first UNESCO World Heritage Site in California. The building underwent a major restoration completed in 2015.
