About This Building

A workplace transformed — the Great Workroom with its iconic lily-pad columns.

The S.C. Johnson Administration Building is one of Wright's most celebrated commercial works. The Great Workroom features slender "dendriform" columns that spread at the top like lily pads, supporting a ceiling of glass tubing that floods the space with natural light. Time magazine called it "one of the greatest buildings of the 20th century." The adjacent Research Tower, completed in 1950, extends the campus with a tapering 15-story shaft.
