About This Building

The prototype for the Usonian house — the first of its kind.

The Malcolm Willey House is considered the prototype for Wright's Usonian houses — the affordable, single-story homes he designed for middle-class American families in the 1930s and 1940s. The house introduced many features that would define the Usonian type: the carport (Wright's invention), the in-floor radiant heating, the open kitchen-living space, and the use of natural materials without applied ornament.
