George Barton House

Buffalo, New YorkCompleted 1903

About This Building

The first structure built in the Martin complex — a Prairie house for Darwin Martin's sister.

The George Barton House (1903) was the first structure completed in the Darwin Martin complex — built for Delta Martin Barton, Darwin's sister, and her husband George Barton at the corner of Summit and Jewett Parkway. Wright designed it two years before the main Martin House, and it served as a kind of proof of concept for the larger commission. The house is a fully resolved Prairie work in its own right, with characteristic horizontal banding, overhanging eaves, and art-glass windows. It is now part of the Martin House Complex and included in the guided tours operated by the Martin House Restoration Corporation.
