Meyer May House

Grand Rapids, MichiganCompleted 1909

About This Building

A meticulously restored Prairie house — every detail original or faithfully reproduced. Free admission.

The Meyer May House (1909) at 450 Madison Avenue SE in Grand Rapids is one of the finest examples of Wright's Prairie Style and one of the most completely restored buildings in the entire Wright canon. Steelcase Inc. purchased the house in 1985 and undertook an extraordinary restoration, reproducing every piece of original furniture, art glass, lighting fixture, and textile to Wright's original specifications. The result is an immersive time-capsule experience: visitors see the house exactly as Wright intended it, down to the carpet patterns and the placement of every vase. The house is open to the public free of charge. Rick McNees documents the Meyer May House on the Wright-Site archive.
