About This Building

Wright's most joyful work — art-glass windows of balloons and confetti for the Coonley kindergarten.

The Coonley Playhouse — formally a kindergarten built for the Coonley estate at 350 Fairbanks Road — is one of Wright's most beloved small works. Its art-glass windows depicting balloons, confetti, and American flags are among the most celebrated in all of Wright's output, a rare moment of pure delight in his Prairie vocabulary. The windows were so admired that several panels were sold off and are now held by major museum collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The building itself remains a private residence in Riverside.
