Wingspread

Wind Point, WisconsinCompleted 1939

About This Building

The last and largest of Wright's Prairie houses — a pinwheel plan around a great central hall.

Wingspread was built for Herbert F. Johnson Jr., heir to the S.C. Johnson fortune, and is considered the last of Wright's Prairie houses. The plan radiates four wings from a central octagonal living hall like a pinwheel, with a massive central chimney rising through the space. Wright called it "the last of the Prairie houses." It is now a conference center operated by the Johnson Foundation.
