About This Building
The Dr. G.C. Stockman House (1908) is one of Wright's earliest fully resolved Prairie houses and the anchor of Mason City's remarkable concentration of Wright-designed buildings. Built for physician George C. Stockman, the house exemplifies the Prairie formula Wright was perfecting at the time: a cruciform plan, low-pitched roof with broad overhanging eaves, bands of art-glass windows, and a strong horizontal emphasis that ties the building to its site. The house fell into neglect after the Stockman family sold it, but was rescued and restored by the River City Society for Historic Preservation. It is now a house museum open for guided tours, and pairs naturally with the Park Inn Hotel two blocks away — together they form the most accessible Wright destination in Iowa.
