Chicago, IllinoisCompleted 1892

About This Building

An early masterwork designed while Wright was still at Adler & Sullivan.

The Charnley-Persky House was designed by Wright while he was working for Louis Sullivan, and it already shows the hallmarks of his mature style — the strong horizontal emphasis, the integration of ornament with structure, and the compression and release of interior space. Architectural historian Vincent Scully called it "the first modern building in America." It is now the headquarters of the Society of Architectural Historians.
