William E. Martin House

Oak Park, IllinoisCompleted 1903

About This Building

A transitional Prairie house — brother of Darwin Martin, who commissioned the Buffalo masterpiece.

The William E. Martin House was designed for the brother of Darwin D. Martin, for whom Wright would later design the celebrated Darwin Martin House in Buffalo. The Oak Park house is a transitional work showing Wright moving decisively toward the mature Prairie Style — the hipped roof, the horizontal emphasis, and the integration of house and garden are all present. It remains a private residence on Elizabeth Court in Oak Park.
