About This Building
The Avery Coonley House was Wright's own favorite among his Prairie houses. The sprawling complex includes the main house, a gardener's cottage, a coach house, and the celebrated Coonley Playhouse — all set in a landscape designed by Wright. The main house features a "zoned" plan that separates living, sleeping, and service areas into distinct wings, a concept that influenced domestic architecture for decades. The playhouse, with its art-glass windows of balloons and confetti, is one of Wright's most joyful works.
