About This Building

The only surviving Wright-designed hotel in the world — restored and operating in Mason City.

The Park Inn Hotel in Mason City, Iowa is the only remaining hotel designed by Frank Lloyd Wright anywhere in the world. Completed in 1910 as part of a combined hotel and law office block, the building is a masterwork of the Prairie Style applied to a commercial program — with its characteristic horizontal banding, art-glass windows, and strong geometric ornament. The hotel fell into disrepair over the decades and was nearly demolished, but a major community-led restoration effort saved it. The building reopened as a boutique hotel in 2011 after a meticulous $20 million restoration. Guests can stay in rooms that Wright designed, and the building is open for tours. It sits adjacent to the Rock Crest–Rock Glen neighborhood, one of the most concentrated collections of Prairie Style houses in the United States.
